Netflix’s “Lady Dynamite” stars comedian Maria Bamford and was created by Pam Brady, who co-wrote the movies “South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut” and “Team America: World Police,” and Mitch Hurwitz, who created Fox’s “Sit Down Shut Up” and “Running Wilde,” and oversaw Netflix’s 2013 revival of his old “Arrested Development” series.
“Doctor Thorne,” hitting Amazon Prime Friday, is the new 4-episode ITV series masterminded by Julian Fellowes, creator of “Downton Abbey.” Ian McShane (“John Wick,” “Game of Thrones”) plays one of the title character’s patients, and, yes, that’s “Mad Men”/”Community” fixture Alison Brie playing the American Miss Dunstable.
Says The New York Times:
Mr. Fellowes emphasizes Trollope’s humor without shortchanging the melodrama, and the production has the feeling of a high-def tribute to an earlier era of British film and television (emphasized by the use of old-fashioned fonts for the credits) — it achieves a kind of rollicking serenity. “Doctor Thorne” is a minor canvas, compared with “Downton Abbey,” but Mr. Fellowes packs a lot of charm and amusement into its 160 minutes.
