Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The rumor for a while was that Adam Wingard had sneakily done a Blair Witch remake over at Lionsgate. It's possible that's still the case and there'll be a surprise reveal down the road, but if not you can easily see why that was the word around his flick, THE WOODS, when you see the trailer.
The whole thing has a Blair Witch-y vibe to it, from the found footage camera style in creepy woods to the threat being largely off-screen and caught only in glimpses.
The first Blair Witch was so effective because it really did shift the perspective of being in a survival horror situation onto the audience. Found footage is largely a rubbish format that comes with automatic plotholes that needs reams of dialogue to explain away (most importantly, why the fuck are people still holding a camera when things go bad), but Blair Witch, REC and Sacrament have come out of this school of filmmaking and all are tonally defined by the shooting style.
Wingard has proven himself again and again with his horror resume and this one looks to recapture some of the creeping sense of dread that made Blair Witch so successful. Or it just has a great trailer. One of those things is for sure.
