Dear lord my friend, Harry here... and we have a poor unfortunate soul in agony here.... trying desperately to remain sane after suffering through what sounds like a nearly unbearable comedy of drek.... Poor fella... He's going to turn to harder stuff if movies like this keep appearing before his eyes. For now though... here ya go....
Harry,
Caught a sneak of The Adventures of Joe Dirt and I have to say, I don't feel so good. I know everybody is ranting about Scooby Doo right now (it is MORE than just a cartoon, btw) but I've found myself deeply regretting the day Deuce Bigelow ever became a box office hit. (Worse, I made the mistake of renting it not too long ago...I know...I know...) After Deuce hit $65 mil in box office, you could just imagine all the studio suits thinking , "hey, a SNL reject + easy toilet humor = new BMW's for everybody." Well, this thinking has come home to roost with the Adventures of Joe Dirt featuring the comedic stylings of David Spade.
Or lack thereof.
Now I have to admit, I've never liked David Spade. He sucks and isn't funny. He couldn't carry Phil Hartman's (God rest his soul) jockstrap on the old SNL. But here he is, as Joe Dirt, a janitor with a mullet, and you can imagine where it goes from there. Hip L.A. DJ (Dennis Miller, not showing any of his biting talent) discovers Joe sweeping the hallways and immediately becomes smitten with Joe's white trash-ness and invites him on the show where Joe recounts his pathetic life story to the glee of the smirky L.A. listeners. Joe's parents abandoned him at the Grand Canyon, he went through a progression of foster homes, and lotsa bad stuff happens throughout his short life usually resulting in Joe, quite literally, getting covered in shit. Still Joe is upbeat, a fact the hip DJ can't get over, and maintains his search for his long lost parents. Also, there's a love interest (I don't know her name--but she looked fantastic) who pines away for Joe as he goes through his ! mi! sadventures. Fortunately, we get a brief respite from this shit (pun intended) when Christopher Walken briefly appears as a NYC mob informant hiding out amongst the white trash courtesy of the Witness Protection Program. Walken's NY accent fits in beautifully and he shows his flair for comedy. I wish the movie was all about his character. Hmmmm.
Instead we're left with Joe Dirt, shit, and a ton of mullet jokes. Now I can take one mullet joke but 2 hours worth? Ugh. Wished I had stayed home for this one. You'll wish you had too.
a poor unfortunate soul
