Umburto Gonzalez, formerly of Latino Review, read that passage from EW and now says “sources” tell HIM the sequel to “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be based on “The Dark Phoenix Saga.”
(Hopefully Gonzalez is not consulting the same X-Men sources who told him the next Wolverine film would definitely NOT be based on Mark Millar’s “Old Man Logan” graphic novel. Because the opposite appears to be true.)
The Dark Phoenix storyline, of course, was already adapted by Simon Kinberg (“This Means War,” “Fantastic Four,” “Star Wars Rebels”) to form parts of Brett Ratner’s dim and wasteful “X-Men: The Last Stand” a decade ago -- but the events of “Last Stand” were happily wiped from movie continuity by a time-traveling Wolverine in Singer’s 2014 epic “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” So the door has opened for Singer to tell the tale of Jean Grey’s transformation in a more worthy manner.
