Mark Rylance seems to have cemented himself as Steven Spielberg's go-to actor. After his Oscar win for BRIDGE OF SPIES, Rylance will be portraying the titual giant in THE BFG, as well as the recently-announced role of Pope Pius IX in THE KIDNAPPING OF EDGARDO MORTARA. Now, THR reports that Rylance is currently in negotiations to board Spielberg's adaptation of Ernie Cline's READY PLAYER ONE.
The story takes place in a near future where the real world is so shitty that most people spend the majority of their time plugged in to a virtual reality space. Rylance will be playing the role of James Donovan Halliday, creator of this virtual world, also known as OASIS. He is an ambiguous character, part genius, part hermit, but always full of surprises.
Rylance joins Tye Sheridan, who has been cast as the main character, Wade, along with Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn.
