The last teaser for Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s BFG ended before we got a good look at the titular character (or any giant, for that matter), but this one remedies all that with a few clear shots of the Friendly Giant voiced by Mark Rylance, and even some of his pals(?) to boot.
This seems perfectly nestled in E.T./HOOK territory, with a young kid becoming friends with an otherworldly creature as she’s plucked into a bizarre environment where she’t both a. hunted and b. completely out of her element. It all seems big, handsome, and cinematic, even before we get to the Giant Country. My favorite image remains the above still, with the huge hand creeping into her bedroom window, but the BFG has some great detailing in the brief shots we get of him, and looks not unlike what I had in my head when I read the book as a kid. Did you catch Jemaine Clement as the voice of the bully giant at the end? Can’t wait to hear more of him (quickly becoming a maestro with funny accents), as well as Bill Hader.
Spielberg’s name isn’t as alluring to kids as it was in the ‘80s, where his and Amblin’s name was on roughly half (maybe more) of the biggest family films of the decade, but this kind of marketing will hopefully tap into the sense of wonder that draws people
I just hope no one gets this confused with the Liam Neeson-starring A MONSTER CALLS…
