Kurt wins. Kurt wins every time. Did you not see BACKDRAFT? “You go, we go,” remember? Do you not bear witness to his glorious ‘stache? Have you not seen any film with Russell in your life? Even if he perishes, he is clearly doing so willingly as a grand sacrificial gesture, the ultimate “fuck you” to whatever element/villain is at bay. Kurt vs. oil, my money’s on Kurt, every time.
*ahem* Anyway, this trailer, like the one for AMERICAN SNIPER, is wrapped around a single scene that serves to highlight the central tension of the film, in this case, when the titular oil rig is going to blow and sink into the ocean, killing 11 of its crewmen. It seems like the same kind of true story, real-men-doing-real-shit movie that Berg/Wahlberg’s LONE SURVIVOR was, but apparently with an even greater sense of spectacle and more of an emphasis on the homelife. The script was co-written by J.C. Chandor, who wrote/directed the terrific, underrated peril-at-sea flick, ALL IS LOST, and if this one's as precise and nail-biting as that one, it'll be something noteworthy indeed.
Strong cast in there too, headed up by God Kurt and Mark the Thunder Buddy and featuring John Malkovich, Ethan Suplee, and Kate Hudson.
This won’t exactly erase the imagery from THERE WILL BE BLOOD out of your head or anything, but I feel like I got my money’s worth with LONE SURVIVOR, and with Kurt + ’stache onboard this time, how can we resist?
DEEPWATER HORIZON blows the roof off the mothersucker on September 30th.
