Fans were probably hoping for a glimpse of the team suited up, but that will have to wait. This image of the brand new Power Rangers team from the upcoming film shows the gang out of uniform. And really, that's okay - the original series spent about as much time with the cast as teenagers as it did showing them as monster-smashing super heroes, so it's not terribly surprising to get a shot of them just hanging out (on an epic cliffside, as teens tend to do).
Your new Rangers are essentially a reboot of the original series as it aired in 1993, consisting of Jason, Billy, Trini, Kimberly and Zack. Sadly, no Green Ranger at this point, which is a bummer, because he was always the cutest to my middle-school eyes.
Starring are RJ Cyler (ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL), Dacre Montgomery (SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD), Naomi Scott (The 33), Ludi Lin (MONSTER HUNT) and singer Becky G. Elizabeth Banks has also joined the cast, taking on the role of villain Rita Repulsa.
According to EW, director Dean Israelite (PROJECT ALMANIC) stated that
... he wanted this superhero story to reflect the lives of teens today. The new Power Rangers is a coming of age story for these “disenfranchised and disparate” high schoolers, who are not friends when the new story begins.
The film is currently shooting in Vancouver, and is slated to hit theaters in March of 2017.
No doubt we'll be seeing tons of footage in the coming months, but for now, meet the new team!
