"We’ve talked about it,” “Spotlight” star Liev Schreiber told MTV News at the Oscars. “I don’t know. I mean, he’s mentioned it to me. Old Man Logan story, that’s appealing. That’s something I can do. 'Old' being the operative word."
“He” is Hugh Jackman. James Mangold, who directed 2013’s terrific “The Wolverine” and will direct 2017’s Wolverine movie (widely understood to be based on Mark Millar’s “Old Man Logan”), had nothing to do with 2009’s useless “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” in which Schreiber took over the role of Victor “Sabretooth” Creed.
Most of the characters in the print version of Old Man Logan are not controlled by Fox, so unless some sort of deal can be worked out between Fox and Disney, the movie won’t be able to utilize Hulk, Hawkeye, Red Skull or Kingpin.
As a result, the journey undertaken by “Wolverine III” will probably substitute a lot of characters (like Sabretooth) Fox does own, which is likely why Patrick Stewart has been recruited to reprise the role of Charles Xavier. (Personally, I think it’d be awesome if a weakened version of Ian McKellen’s Magneto hired Logan for his cross-country journey.)
Fox also controls “The Fantastic Four,” and I’d be pleased to see grizzled, broken versions of Reed Richards and Johnny Storm encounter The Artist Formerly Known as Wolverine along the way. Maybe the offspring of Ben Grimm can substitute for the Banners as Logan’s menacing landlords.
Published in 2008 and 2009, "Old Man Logan" takes place more than 50 years in the future on Earth-807128. Most of the Marvel superheroes have been slain and the United States has been carved up into territories controlled by supervillains Kingpin, Doctor Doom, Red Skull and The Hulk. Logan lives with his wife and kids near Sacramento, now a component of Hulkland, where he must pay rent to the grotesque incest-derived offspring of Bruce Banner and Jennifer Walters. To raise cash and avoid eviction, Logan takes a job helping a blind Hawkeye on a cross-country journey to deliver a mysterious package to a destination Back East.
Hawkeye is blind in Old Man Logan. Maybe in the movie Sabretooth will be missing his arms.
