Man. I don't know how many of you poor unfortunate souls have been suckered into seeing RED PLANET yet, but undoubtedly you are currently licking the wounds and wondering how a story as shockingly uninvolving and lame saw fit to gain production. I'm wondering the same thing.
I cut my review short last night because I figured that I had had enough of dealing with that film... and wanted to be rid of it. I mean, the film is basically all about problem, walk 20km, problem, change direction walk 100km, problem, time frame getting close, problem, continue walking.... sit here... rest for a while, keep walking. I mean imagine if you were making THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING and you just started with Caine and Connery wandering about... for the entire film. Just walking around.... Snow Storm, trouble breathing.... rabid robot dog.... That sort of thing. I just found it tedious and boring. Some critics would like to make you think that the complete lack of character development and interesting plot devices.... would make this a 'THOUGHTFUL' film above the addle minds of we grunt and scratchers.... But folks... to each their own opinion. I'm accused of liking everything... and I DON'T LIKE THIS. Fine, go or don't. I would recommend BILLY ELLIOT, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, GIRL ON A BRIDGE, WONDER BOYS, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, BAMBOOZLED and a half dozen others before I recommend you see this one.
Now in my earlier review I talked about how terribly CG looking the spacecraft in RED PLANET was.... how it just looked fakey to an extreme.... Well, believe it or not.... That ugly terribly undetailed wretch of a ship was a MODEL. Here's the pics to prove it:
