Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. JJ Abrams' Bad Robot has been quietly producing a small genre picture helmed by Dan Trachtenberg and starring John Gallagher Jr (see Short Term 12, y'all!), the great Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the bestest of the restest John Goodman. That film has been going under the working title Valencia, but now they've finally dropped the trailer, poster and official title.
10 Cloverfield Lane should ring some bells, but from what I understand you shouldn't get your hopes up for a big monster movie.
The trailer's pretty great, setting up all them mysteries people on message boards like to complain about, but that I personally love. Remember when we used to complain that trailers gave away too much? Now when they give away little that's bad, too? Come on, folks.
Anyway, here's the nifty trailer:
Lookin' good!
Abrams has come out and said the film is a "blood relative" of Cloverfield. Sounds to me like they're trying to pull the "Popular title is an umbrella for a bunch of different genre stories" tact that bit John Carpenter in the ass on Halloween 3.
The Cloverfield monster isn't quite Michael Myers and hasn't been built up for multiple films as a horror icon, so perhaps they'll see more luck than Carpenter did. I happen to love Halloween 3, so I'm good either way.
I can't speak for the rest of the movie-going population, but I'm going in just hoping for a fun flick and since I love the cast and the little glimpses we got in the trailer I think I'm in a good spot. What do you folks think?
