You might remember the last Toronto film fan mentioning THE CUBE. And a company called C.O.R.E. that handled the effects. Bob Munroe and John Mariella served as Visual FX Directors on the film. How did this first time director get such nice looking effects? Well C.O.R.E. did them for free because they wanted to help the Canadian Vincenzo Natali (who did win the Toronto Film Festival award for Best First-Time Director for THE CUBE) C.O.R.E. did FX work for Fly Away Home and Mimic and some of the work for Spawn. They are currently working on Doctor Dolittle and The Big Hit, as well as FLUBBER for Disney. Instead of being Uncle Scrooge's with their good fortune they were able to do some pro bono work for CUBE. Which had a script they loved and was a project they wanted to work on. Isn't it nice to see artist helping artist in need? I love it. Imagine working on a project because you are excited by it, not for the money it brings. Sigh. Maybe it'll catch on.
