Father Geek here with LOBO and Coffin Joe bringing you your regular Tuesday morning Latin-AICN column once again. Buuuuuut first I've got an interesting report on what Guillermo del Toro (CRONOS) is up to now that he has wrapped THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE that he shot in Spain this summer. For several weeks now he has been burning up the airways traveling here and there tending to business concerning BLADE 2: BLOODHUNT, and here is a little report sent in by Porkboy that will shed a little light on those activities...
HARRY NOTE: Word has it that Ray Parks is in talks to feature into BLADE 2.... casting is indeed going on... but this is the latest!
Porkboy here, with some Blade sequel news. David Goyer told ComicsContinuum.com that pre-production has begun for Blade2: Bloodhunt. Goyer wrote 1998's Blade and has also written Bloodhunt as well. Guillermo Del Toro will be director with Wesley Snipes returning as Blade. The movie will be produced by New Line Cinemas and it will be going for a solid "R" rating, yay!!
David Goyer stated the following to ComicsContinuum: "We began pre-production on Blade II last Monday. Right now, Guillermo del Toro has been working with Mike Mignola, and Tim Bradstreet along with a number of other conceptual artists. Looks like Steve Johnson will be doing the creature effects. Casting begins next week, etc."
Speaking of David Goyer, he is on his 1st draft of the upcoming "Ghost Rider" comic-film transition and the script should be finished by the end of the month with Stephen Norrington directing (Director of the 1st "Blade").
Alright everyone, I hope you enjoyed the news and I just finished watching "The Convent" and this movie really kicks major ass. I will have a huge report with an exclusive interview with "Mike Mendez" (director), review of the film, and other kick ass Convent stuff. Be sure to check it out next week or so.
~Porkboy (Seppultra@aol.com)
Father Geek back again... I talked with Bradstreet awhile back and he said he was working on the look of the Vampires, that Mignola was designing the enviroment, and that Richard Corbin was creating some monsters. That's just way cool. Well, now on to LOBO and his report...
LOBO y Cinema de las Americas...
Que pasa CineLocos I am back, LOBO esta aqui, this time with a bunch of stuff and a variety of things, I know you all didn't mind the abscence of my report last week, but its okay because I am here again to bug you with more information and news from the LATIN film industry and a lot more, last week I was actually writing my report when the stupid machine crashed and made me loose all of the things I've wrote, so I was pissed off and I decided to stay away from the machine before I bit the computer's head off and ripped it apart..so that's why I wasn't in the column last week, another thing was that I actually thought about not doing this anymore, since I don't really see why in the hell I'm doing it because I am not a movie whorshipper and can't really be a film critic, but on the other side I think you can call me an entertainment reporter or whatever, I really enjoy the things I do here for all of you out there, the news and info I get so I can share it with all of you that read this column and I also think that is kind of cool to give out my own opinions on certain films and stuff, just to share with you folks and maybe that way you can either hate me or dislike me, or love me.
I am not a movie encyclopedia or a movie database, to tell you the truth I didn't know shit about movies, for me they were just things to see once in a theater and then forget about them, except the ones I consider good ones which there aren't that many since I am really picky and I pay a lot of attention on the little details. There was even a time after I met Sister Satan, that made me decide to get a job surrounded by this enviroment so I could learn more about that world of MOVIES, which I thought was another language and another way of thinking and living, well that's when I got a job at a local video store and I started to learn more about actors and directors, effects, classics, scifi films and stuff, I even watched almost all of the videos at the store and let me tell you it has a wide variety of movies, I worked there for a year and a half so I let you do the figures on how many movies I watched. After this I really noticed that, that MOVIE world wasn't for me, yes it might be that other way of thinking or that other way to see real life inside a scope being projected onto the big sheet, but I just didn't like it, I love soccer but I still play chess and speak spanish and since that movie geekiness thing just doesn't fit into my world, I am just going to stick with what I always thought about film, go see it, eat the popcorn, have a good time (depending on either the film is good or not) and wait for the next release. So I hope you people out there understand if I am not that mighty a judger, since I have no movie background and now I am just doing this because I like typing, it helps me know a lot of what's happening south of the border and gives out some more information on what's going on with the LATIN side of Hollywood and the Latin American film industry. So with nothing more to say and now that you know more about me, let's go to LO BUENO, EL REPORTAJE mio y el de mis cuates Coffin Joe and Ulysses without forgetting to say one more thing, VIVA EL TEQUILA , EL ROCK EN ESPAÑOL, EL FUTBOL y MI FAMILIA , VIVA LA VIRGEN MARIA y ahora vamos al reportaje que les tenemos este Dia .....

These are the Mexican films that are in competition for the place of representing Mexico at the Oscars ceremony in the Best Foreign Film category, right now I think this is the complete list of the contestants and I don't see the movie "La Ley de Herodes" which I've heard that it didn't get into this competition for reasons yet unknown, also here is a movie that just opened in theaters in Mexico this past Thursday "Cronica de un Desyauno" and also the movie " Por la libre" who had also got released just 2 weeks ago, so let's check that list and make your own votes on which movie should be the one to represent Mexico at the Oscars, my suggestion would be "La Ley de Herodes" but since its not going for it I have to stick with "Amores Perros"....
This is the E-mail I got from SILVIA GIL RIVERA cordinator of the AMACC...

..." In the Time of the Butterflies"
Chamacos y Chamacas this part of the report shows some pictures taken on the set of the movie "In the Time of the Butterflies", our cuate MORRIS send them to my cave so I can post them and share the images with you. The plot on this movie sounds okay, but to be honest with you I haven't read the novel and so far all I know about this film has already being said before, but I trust for the film to become a great film since the Actors that are participating in it are well known and they are working on it for a reason, could be a great story line based on the novel or a great team behind the cameras including the Director MARIANO BARROSO from Spain. You all know the talented Actor EDWARD JAMES OLMOS and he does a good job on every movie he is in ( Stand and Deliver - one of my favorites) .
The actor DEMIAN BICHIR is a very in demand Actor in Mexico and he has worked his ass off this past year, he is in movies like "Cilantro y Perejil", "Santitos", "Sexo Pudor y Lagrimas" and "Todo el poder" which were really well accepted in Mexico and around the world, he is going trhu a great moment on his career and his Acting is really good, I really liked the way he managed his characters in "Sexo Pudor y Lagrimas" and "Todo el Poder".
Now MARC ANTHONY, is not that I have something against his career as a singer but I like him better as an Actor, he is a fun guy to watch on the big screen and he knows how to do his part just like he did in the movie "The Substitute" I mean he was a real MOFO looking kind of guy and let's not forget the character he had in " Bringing out the Dead" right there in that film I really liked the way he acted and it's cool he is sticking with the acting thing.
About SALMA HAYEK I don't think I have to mention that much of her since all of you know what she has done, but I will mention the movies where I liked the way she acted "El Callejon de los Milagros", "Desperado" and "El Coronel no tiene quien le Escriba". So now you have it, that's what I can give you right now about this film, hopefully I will get more information on it and maybe some E-mails from the Actors (Espero y cruzo los dedos)..
For now let's go check what MORRIS sent....
Lobo, I am sending you some pictures taken on the set of "In The Time of the Butterflies". The movie is being filmed now in various cities of Mexico and stars Salma Hayek, Edward James Olmos, Marc Anthony and Demian Bichir. It's based in the book by the same name and the plot is about four sisters in the 50's who rebelled against Dictator Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
He later assassinated three of the four sisters, so this is the story of their lives. Anyway, I think you already know that, so I thought you'd liked to see them.....

*** I'm almost positive the picture above was taken in the Studios Churubusco, where they have done some of the scenes. The ESTUDIOS CHURUBUSCO had also help in the making of "Titanic", "The Mask of Zorro" and "Dune"....

*** In this pic we see the Director talking to SALMA and DEMIAN...

*** Here is SALMA one more time, just taking a break...
MORRIS..
Well there you have it, a little sneak in the making of "In the Time of the Butterflies", thanx a lot for the pictures MORRIS, I hope you can get your hands on more so we can share them with the folks that read this column and the fans of SALMA...Gracias cuate..
..." CRONICA DE UN DESAYUNO "

This film my friends was just released in Mexico this past Thursday and so far is doing great, a lot of people and critics have given this film the common BEST FILM OF THE YEAR, but that for me is kind of hard to believe because we always hear that on every new movie. The film promises a lot for the industry cinematografica in Mexico and also is expecting a lot of income at the box office. The cast is formed by big names inside the movie industry of Mexico and also Actors not that big who had usually worked in some movies and TV y Novelas. The big team in the cast starts with ANGELICA ARAGON (Toy Soldiers, A walk in the Clouds) who is a well known Actress for her great acting skills, next in the list is HECTOR BONILLA ("El Bulto", "Rojo Amanecer", "Los novios") who has lots of experience and talented, then we have MARIA ROJO a sexy women who previously worked in movies like "DANZON", "SALON MEXICO" and "LA TAREA" where I have to say she is a good Actress and I love the characters she gets to be, BRUNO and ODISEO from the Bichir clan who are also as good as DAMIAN BICHIR but ODISEO is the one that sticks out the most for me since he play the role of a guy either Drunk or Insane in one of the TV novelas in Mexico which I think it was "Carrousel" but I am not really sure, but let me tell you he is a Señor Actor. The rest of the cast is EDUARDO PALOMO who plays the main character, MIGUEL SANTANA, FABIANA PERZABAL etc...
The film was in the hands of BENJAMIN CANN and I don't know much about this Director, all I heard was that he has done a lot of those TV Novelas (TV series-soap opera) so I can't lie to you and tell you ....YEAH THIS IS THE GREATEST FILM OF THE YEAR...not until I get more information on this matter and get some reports from mis cuates in Mexico who are going to see this film and send me stuff for me to review...until then I am just going to say that the film crew said on a press interview that it is a film with some black humor, discrete violence and they also said that it might turn to be e little controversial since there is a character played by EDUARDO PALOMO who goes Transvestite during the movie, also they have said that this is some of those films that have non-sense stories and also was edited with some out of focus and overlight scenes, this makes it sound like a movie that has some of Buñuel's and Jodorowsky's touches..but once again I don't know so let's wait for those reports from Mexico and then we will talk more about it...okay..
...XTRA COSAS
...There is a possibility of "VAMPIRES; Death" being filmed in Mexico, right now John Carpenter is thinking about that, but if this happens or if he gets to a decision soon I will keep you informed, so far I know Jon Bon Jovi will star on the film, but we will see later in the year 2001 if they go to Mexico...and if they do I will recommend some locations in the state of HIDALGO, specially the place by an Hacienda call "LOS PRISMAS" and TOLANTONGO which I think they have great natural landscapes for a vampire environment.
Okay Amigos, I hope you all like the stuff I (LOBO) had for you this time and hopefully I will get more pictures from that movie with SALMA and more information of the movie "Cronica de un desayuno" and if I do I will probably will give the info by the middle of this week, so be on the look out..now I have to say Hasta Luego Compañeros y colegas and don't forget to send me whatever you can pick related to the Cinema de las Americas to my CAVE and also don't forget to Vote this Tuesday..and if you do make sure you do the right choice for yourself and not just check a box just for the hell of it okay....Nos Vemos...
Coffin Joe and Brasil...
Hey Father Geek , Latin-AICN readers , Coffin Joe here with your weekly dose of Brazilain movie news . Here´s this week´s column :
Hey Father Geek , Latin-AICN readers , Coffin Joe here with your weekly dose of Brazilain movie news . Here´s this week´s column :
-The Cinemark chain of movie theatres is doing a huge promotional event today ( November 6th ) at all of their cinemas , so if you´re in Brazil get your ass moving . What they´re doing is basically one day of Brazilian movies , all types of movies made in Brazil in the last decade , the so called " films of the rebirth of Brazilian Cinema " , at their theatres . Wait it´s not over yet , the best thing about the whole deal is that the tickets will be just 1 real ( that is like fifty cents of a dollar - how cheap is that ? ) . Another nice thing about this showcase is that all the money they make from it will be going to charity ( movie related charity for restoration and preservation of films for instance ) . Among the movies that will be screened we have : Beto Brant´s " Belly Up " , Walter Salles´ " Midnight " , Hector Babenco´s " Foolish Heart " , Cao Hamburguer´s Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum , o Filme and many others . More than fifty (?!) movies will be screened today all over the place so hurry .
More info over at the Cinemark theatres site : www.cinemark.com.br
-Speaking of Cao Hamburguer´s " Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum , o Filme " ( a movie I told you guys was the best damn flick for kids I´ve seen in a long time ) it won the award for Best Foreign feature film at the Chicago Kidfest film festival . The movie was running for the award against 210 other flicks .During the festival , which lasted from October 12 until the 22nd , Cao Hamburguer went there , playing with kids at a number of workshops he particpated in .
