Quint did a fine write-up of Melissa Mathison when she passed away recently. As a life-long E.T. fan, I wanted to add that E.T. wouldn't have worked nearly as well without Mathison's involvement. She got childhood right. That sense of adventure, the cadence of youth, the inherent smart-assery of every kid - Mathison nailed it. Her loss was a tremendous one to me, but I'm overjoyed that she was able to get one more piece of art out there, and that Steven Spielberg was able to direct her adaptation of THE BFG.
I've never read Roald Dahl's book - it's one that just missed me, for whatever reason, but I'll be sure to dive in now. Spielberg knows wonder. He knows cinematic joy. And he knows spectacle - probably like no other director alive can. I am extraordinarily confident that THE BFG will bring us back to those halcyon days of 1982 - in its own way, of course. This looks truly wonderful and I can't wait to see it with my loved ones next summer. Here's the teaser:
