THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY, formerly just GRIMSBY, has got its first teaser, which, despite a whole buncha violence, saves its red-band qualifier for its final moments…which is the only joke in the trailer.
Weirdly enough, they’ve chosen to focus on what looks to be Mark Strong’s intro as the superspy brother, who later teams up with his soccer hooligan brother played by Sacha Baron Cohen when he’s framed for a political assassination. Sure, director Louis Leterrier is best known for stuff like TRANSPORTER, DANNY THE DOG a.k.a. UNLEASHED, and CLASH OF THE TITANS, but from everything I’ve seen and heard of this flick, it is a raucous, raunchy comedy first and foremost. Seriously, word is that this absolutely falls in line with the gross-out comedy of Cohen’s past films, with set-pieces that push any and all boundaries of good taste.
I will say that the action looks surprisingly competent for an action-comedy, and the spy setting looks more convincing and straightforward than in stuff like AUSTIN POWERS or JOHNNY ENGLISH. Even though we really only see Rebel Wilson, the rest of the supporting cast is pretty impressive (Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Gabourey Sidibe, Scott Adkins, and Mrs. Cohen herself, Isla Fisher), and I’m tickled by the idea of a big-budget comedy with a lecherous soccer hooligan who looks like Oasis' Liam Gallagher at its center (particularly when he’s played by a guy who 69ed Ken Davitian).
Still, this is a little too short to sell us on anything except the idea that the action is legit (and that Rebel Wilson gets rodgered by Cohen in public at some point), but I’m looking forward to seeing more from this flick. Y'all digging on this?
THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY bond on February 26th, 2016.
