A day after we heard Ridley Scott say that there won’t be any direct link to ALIEN until the third or fourth PROMETHEUS sequel, and he announces the title for the first follow-up:
ALIEN: PARADISE LOST.
So, he’s just fucking with us, right?
Remember that PROMETHEUS was going by ALIEN: ENGINEERS until Damon Lindelof came aboard to work on Jon Spaihts’ original script.
In this interview with Hey U Guys, Scott reveals the title and says that there’s a direct connection between John Milton’s story and the upcoming sequel, but of course doesn’t go into detail.
I just think it’s hilarious that they’re putting ALIEN back in the title after working so hard to differentiate PROMETHEUS from the original series, up to and including Scott’s remarks about holding off on the xenomorphs in the next film. Most of us thought that this series would be somewhat isolated from the ALIEN series proper, and that Neil Blomkamp’s movie would be the first official ALIEN entry since RESURRECTION. Obviously, this muddies that up a bit. What’s that mean for Blomkamp’s project? Wouldn’t it be confusing to have ALIEN 5 (featuring Ripley) falling plop in between ALIEN: PARADISE LOST and ALIEN: SOMETHING OR ANOTHER?
Fox might veto this title the same way they jettisoned ALIEN: ENGINEERS to directly link this sequel to the first film, but for now, I guess it’s ALIEN: PARADISE LOST, even though ALIEN won’t be showing up.
ALIEN: PARADISE LOST will come out sometime in 2017, probably summer.
