I’m not feeling a lot of excitement out there for this POINT BREAK remake (a lot of “Who is this for?”, “What’s the point?”, and “Leave Swayze’s legacy be!”), but maybe this trailer will be the thing to change the tide of the buzz.
Personally, the film’s new aesethic and approach do absolutely nothing for me. There’s a reason that POINT BREAK is POINT BREAK and EXTREME OPS is EXTREME OPS, and this isn’t showing much of the thing that distinguishes the former from the latter: character and personality. I’m seeing a lot of pretty second unit shots and a lot of stunts, and I’m not sure that has enough appeal to get a sizable audience in there opening day, particularly at Christmas. There is still absolutely zero evidence that this new Bodhi and Utah will make any sort of impression on us, let alone make us forget about Swayze and Keanu, and the anti-capitalist stunt-robberies don’t seem quite as provocative or badass as they seem to think they do. Certainly not on the level of Reagan-Bodhi telling the scared bank employees and customers, “And please, don’t forget to vote!”
We’ll hear if the movie is a fun ride or not sooner than later, but this is looking just as grim to this observer as it did when the project was first announced. But I’m just one guy; this doin’ anything for ya?
The little hand says its time for POINT BREAK to rock and roll on December 25th.
