Disney's doing a new Mary Poppins... with Rob Marshall. Ugh...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Variety is reporting that Disney's moving forward with a rebootquel (reboot sequel, ya dig?) of Mary Poppins and they're looking to reteam with Into the Woods director Rob Marshall.

I'm an optimistic glass half full kinda guy, but this sounds shaky to me. I guess it's better that they're sequelizing Poppins instead of a straight up remake. Variety says the plan is to set the film 20 years after the events of the first Poppins and will be set in London, is a musical, and still involve the Bankses.

I guess that puts Julie Andrews at the perfect age to play Granny Banks, doesn't it?

Now the real question: Who will play Mary? I mean, it'll probably be Jennifer Lawrence, but Kristen Bell has already proven quite adept at playing the character...

I'm not an automatic Rob Marshall hater, but outside of Chicago his stuff hasn't done much for me. He can make things look good, but there's very little oomph to his recent work. All I know is that they better get Richard Sherman to work. The dude's pushing 90, but still as lively as ever and if they're going to do a new Mary Poppins there has to be some Sherman influence to the music.

Or they could go in a completely different direction and do something like this:

Thoughts?
