Hey folks, Harry here in Los Angeles... While wandering around Comedy Central's SOUTH PARK premiere party tonight... I met a scrawny San Francisco sapling, whom I'll call Captain Mac Man. Now.. I met Captain Mac Man years ago at the A BUG'S LIFE premiere up in Northern California... and I know him to be... an Apple-eyed ally of Steve Jobs. Well, imagine my delight when he tells me that he overheard Steve Jobs and James Cameron talking about a project that Cameron has pitched over at FOX called EARTHSHIP.
Now this isn't a science fiction work... this is a reality project... a documentary that... if Captain Mac Man heard correctly will take us, the audience from the depths of the ocean and into space in 3-D Hi Def... with cameras that he is industriously creating with the aid of SONY to make the film possible.
Now... I find this fascinating. As the 'King of the World' of Narrative filmmaking.... having created one of the most award winning films that was also one of the most popular films of all time... What challenges can really appeal to Cameron? And you have to understand... Cameron is very much about challenges. Here... It looks like he's wanting to make a science orientated documentary that would get mainstream screen distribution. Sort of what FOR ALL MANKIND should've gotten... And to another degree... DARK DAYS that is currently out there... but just will never get the push... that a filmmaker with the clout and track record that a James Cameron brings to the table.
While, personally I just want to see Cameron shooting again... I really have to say that something like this that has his full passion attached... well, I'd rather see that then a knock off TRUE LIES 2 (unless of course he does get that right). Cameron may come across to some as an arrogant egotist... but to me, he's the daring filmmaker that truly does try to do the things that George Lucas and Spielberg talk about trying to do. He innovates the technology of film... pushing the tools we have further... to such a degree that they become... a new tool. He has created gigantic character driven box office films. And now... well he wants to do something... completely different... yet again. Huzzah. Keep us guessing James!
