“Think ‘Felicity Smoak’ from Arrow,” reads the casting call.
Barry Allen’s love interest in the comic books was always news hen Iris West (eventually Iris West Allen), but TV Line reports the “Flash” TV show is currently on the hunt for a non-Iris love interest for Barry modeled on the “Arrow” character Felicity Smoak.
So they’re looking for someone hot and bespectacled?
The new “Flash” character, Wendy, is described as “spunky, fun and funny” as well as bright and scientifically minded.
Like its print counterpart, The CW’s “Flash” is no stranger to time travel, and there have been hints from the future that Barry and Iris will indeed eventually move beyond their sort-of brother-sister status.
I’m not certain if Wendy has a print counterpart, but Smoak originally appeared in a 1984 issue of “The Fury of Firestorm” as a hot blonde software exec who became stepmother to Ronnie “Firestorm” Raymond. On the “Arrow” series she is the former girlfriend of Ray “Atom” Palmer and the current girlfriend of Oliver “Arrow” Queen.
(In the silver-age DC comics, Queen is known as The Green Arrow and linked romantically to Dinah Lance, The Black Canary. “Arrow” has featured sisters Sara Lance and Dinah Laurel Lance, who both fought crime using the identity “Canary.” Sara Lance, who died on “Arrow,” will apparently be resurrected as “White Canary” for the midseason CW spin-off “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”)
