Michael Ausiello at TV Line is reporting that the coming sixth season of “Downton Abbey” will be its last.
(If you’re an American, feel free to mentally change that headline to “DOWNTON ABBEY: 2011-2016,” since PBS is not likely to air the final season of ITV’s 1920s-set drama until early next year.)
The series still gets stellar ratings here and abroad, but the majority of the actors playing Clan Crawley & Co. are said to be unwilling to renew their “Downton” contracts, many of which expire after season six.
Julian Fellowes, who created “Downton” and scripts all of its episodes, is meanwhile developing a new series, “The Gilded Age,” for NBC. Fellowes has suggested that some “Downton” actors could play new characters in “Gilded,” which would be set in 1870s New York.
