We’ve seen clips of environments and models from this show, we’ve seen teasers and character dossiers, and now comes our first proper trailer from THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO! - the soon to transmit re-invention of Gerry Anderson’s classic SuperMarionation series from the 1960s.
Some may find this too far away from the physical puppetry and ‘hard’ model work of the progenitor show (although there is some WETA model work featured here - environs in particular) . Me? This reel feels just about right, pretty darn good actually - and I hope the energy and vitality of this trailer is evident in the show itself.
I do find the characters a tad under-rendered, perhaps overly simplistic in appearance here? ‘Too CGI,’ maybe? But I said the same thing about THE CLONE WARS, which I ended up adoring once it found its groove, and REBELS - which very much (and quite successfully) hinges on fine character work. So, hope shines brightly that THUNDERBIRDS is pulled off as wisely or thoughtfully.
No word yet (that I’m aware of) regarding when THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO! actually transmits - but press screenings are imminent, so I’m assuming it’ll hit the air soon.
