We’ve been hearing rumblings about a new RING film for a while now, but plot info has been scarce. Would this new film pick up where the 2005 sequel left off? Would it tell different tales of horror stemming from Samara and her haunted videotape?
Bloody Disgusting has a line on some info, and according to them, RINGS will be a prequel, taking place long before the tape came into being, and delving into “the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.”
A lot of Samara’s early life was covered in flashback sequences in the 2002 film, but what was left shrouded was exactly who Samara was, and how she came into being. We knew that her parents, the Morgans, had tried for years to have a child, but with no success. Then, one year, they left home for a period of time, and returned with the baby Samara. No additional details were given, other than noting that things weren’t the same after that, as Samara had an absolutely hellish way of getting inside people’s heads, eventually leading to the mysterious tape that kills you seven days after you watch it.
If I were to guess, I would say that rather than rehash same territory covered in the first film, which showed how the child had a powerful, otherworld effect on her parents and those around her, the new film will focus more on how Samara came to be in the first place, and what makes her the wicked ball of evil that she is.
Hopefully, more details will emerge as the film heads into production. It is being helmed by F. Javier Gutierrez, who left the long-struggling reboot of THE CROW to work on RINGS. Italian actress Matilda Lutz will star, and the film is currently slated to open on November 13, 2015.
