First clip from Jared Hess' DON VERDEAN has Danny McBride sending Sam Rockwell on a mission from God!

Jared Hess’ first movie since 2009’s slight, but underrated oddity GENTLEMEN BRONCOS, DON VERDEAN, has already been picked up at Sundance ahead of its premiere this Wednesday. Deadline has posted this clip from the comedy, and it’s the first look we’ve gotten yet at Hess’ latest look at Middle-American eccentrics.

The film stars Sam Rockwell as an archeologist who enters a deal with a church (headed up by Danny McBride) to give them exclusive rights to any Biblical artifacts he digs up. Of course, the arrangement doesn’t go as expected, and there’s some sort of major, disastrous coverup.

Is anyone else feeling that thick sense of insincerity coming off of McBride’s character?

Call me an easy sell, but this clip and that cast have already gotten me more excited for Hess’ next than I’ve been for any of his post-NAPOLEON DYNAMITE work so far. Are you as charmed as I am, or can Hess’ particular brand of comedy take a hike?

DON VERDEAN premieres this Wednesday at Sundance, and will hopefully pop up in theaters by the end of the year.
