Folks look at URBAN LEGEND: FINAL CUT..... sigh

Folks, Harry here.... I've seen this film, and this is one of the most aggravating types of films there are.... When watching the film, you can see the intelligence of Ottman's direction....even though the script is a TURD and the cast is pretty subpar. God, if only John had held off directing till a good script came along... but then... when you want to direct... James Cameron was attached to PIRANHA II.... Ottman's opening pre-titles scene... I liked, but whew... slim pickings after that... If you want to be scared this weekend see THE EXORCIST! Here ya go...

And here is The Gregor's look...

Dear Aint-It-Cool-Newsers,

I caught a screening of URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT over the weekend. Director John Ottman spoke before the screening and came across as a really nice guy, making you want to like his film. Alas...

This movie sucks. It pretty much tops the list of "most needless sequels." The story itself makes very little sense, the murders having nothing to do with urban legends. Instead, someone is killing off the film students involved with making a movie about, essentially, the first movie - a killer who kills people according to urban legends. The characters are completely one-note and the slasher has that inexplicable psychic ability to predict EXACTLY WHERE THE HEROINE IS GOING at every step along the way. Ottman does a competent job directing the movie but is saddled with one horror cliche after another. There's the requisite "it was only a dream" sequence, TWO movie-within-a-movie sequences and numerous false scares, none of which caused a single jolt in the audience.

In the end, the story leaves a number of questions lingering. Particularly, how does stuff like this get made? What happened to "SCARY" horror movies? How can something so nonsensical get thru the development process, or is it the development process that creates this nonsensical crap? Lastly, how can Neal Moritz continue to call his company "ORIGINAL FILMS" when all he makes are remakes, sequels and rehashes?

Call me The Gregor.

And here's Lionclaw...

What's up everyone. Lionclaw here with my second review, unfortunately for another BAD movie (my first was for THE REPLACEMENTS), this time it's the completely unnecessary sequel URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT. I got into a special screening. I use the term special very lightly. First off, since this movie had no real merit in being made (besides the usual "Oh, horror movies are cheap and they can easily turn a profit" bullpoop), there was NO chance at it being any good. It would've taken an act of God. God obviously didn't give a rat's rear end on this one.

We start at some supposedly prestigious film school (or film and rowing school is more like it from the 3 or 4 shots of people rowing/kayaking down the damn river), where our pretty 20-something cast is making a horror movie. Forget it, I'm not going into details on the plot because it would hurt my brain. Do ALL film students make ONLY horror films??? We have several students competing for The Hitchcock Award (he must be seizing in his grave for the abuse of his name in this flick). And the tangled web begins as we (as usual) are lead to suspect the various characters through odd turns of events and cheap scares. The urban legends were dumb as hell in this flick by the way. To sum it up, the plot is stupid, the characters are weak, the chills not scary, and the movie.....not needed.

But I don't want to be all negative. There were a FEW saving graces in this one to keep it from failing on my grading scale. First, it did have some really funny moments and performances (mainly from scene-stealer Loretta Devine who returns from the original, and from Mr. Every Other Movie in 2000 Anthony Anderson, who as always provides good laughs along the way, particularly when he reacts to his partner saying "FUCK GEORGE LUCAS!", he makes a sign of the cross and says "You're goin to hell!") Joey Lawrence is used sporadically, but somewhat effectively. Excuse me, JoSEPH Lawrence (apparently he's a fine actor or something now). I don't want to knock John Ottman too much, cuz I do think he's talent.......SCORING and EDITING! He does a blatant homage to THE USUAL SUSPECTS with a boom mike at one point. Good try, but terribly timing with it. So anyway, there were some good laughs where the whole audience laughed with the movie, and some other laughs when the whole audience laughed AT the movie.

The ending is actually decent. Had the rest of the movie been good, it would have been a great ending. BUT, it's a decent ending to a bad movie. I won't give it away, but it's funny and effective. I ALMOST, ALMOST want to recommend the movie for its few bright spots, but I can't because that would mean people might go see it and the studio thinks URBAN LEGENDS 3: THE LAST ONE WAS THE ROUGH CUT may come to pass. No thanks. Say no thanks to this one this weekend and go see ALMOST FAMOUS, NURSE BETTY, or THE EXORCIST this weekend instead. Thanks and later. My grade for this: a 74

And here's Bed Wetter...

Hi Harry:

I saw this yesterday at an advance screening...and it was bad.....but it's the kinda bad that makes it entertaining... The ending (no spoiler..don't worry) where the killer(s) revealed his/her/their motivation for killing was so ridiculous that you can't help but to like this movie... It's a great flick to check out with a full house (if it happens, that is..:-p)

Tons of horror movie references and movie references in general... Though there are dull moments, it was a lot of fun overall... less scares than the first one, but more jokey and campy...

and YES, it has A LOT OF gore and blood that'll keep you happy...

cheers,

BedWetter
