The big news day continues (although this is like a burp after a big meal) as The Wrap is reporting that EARTH TO ECHO director, David Green (not David Gordon Green) is in discussions to helm the next TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film.
The first one was a moderate financial success ($477 million worldwide) with Jonathan Liebesman directing, but it was slammed by critics and a lot of older fans of the property. I just saw it a couple of nights ago and was about a six-pack down (plus low expectations), so I didn’t hate it and I actually enjoyed the turtles themselves, but the rest of it was cringe inducing in a lot of places (what the hell was Will Arnett doing?).
I have not seen EARTH TO ECHO though, so I can’t speak to David Green’s talent or skill, but I don’t think it’s likely that he is any worse than Liebesman. I just don't know how big of an impact he can really have when it comes to improving the sequel though. The big issues with the first film were the script, the story, and the fact that the turtles were mostly side characters to a stupid plot and bad characters. Not a lot of those things are likely to be improved on by a new director and they are bringing back Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to also write the sequel. Not to mention that it’s a Platinum Dunes production, so taking all of those things into account, I don’t have high hopes that they will actually improve on the first film. It will still sell a shit load of toys so who cares about those things?
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 is set to hit theaters on June 3rd, 2016.
