Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the forces behind the two JUMP STREET movies to date) will script the May 26, 2017 release.
The team wrote and directed the progenitor LEGO MOVIE, although my understanding is Chris McKay was hugely instrumental in the execution of that first installment - which Miller and Lord classily and graciously acknowledge in the movie’s Blu-ray extras.
At one point, McKay was slated to helm this sequel, but he has apparently shifted onto THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE which was recently announced. Leaving the issue of who will helm LEGO MOVIE 2 unclear at the moment.
Can McKay wrangle both? If Lord and Miller are back in the fold, will they once more pick up the reins? Interesting times.
With time-intensitive production realities nipping at the project’s heels, it’s a safe bet decisions will be made…and that we’ll be hearing more…rather soon.
As stated above, the second LEGO MOVIE is targeting a May 2017 release date. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE - spinning off THE LEGO MOVIE’s awesomely ridiculous Dark Knight - is slated for a February release earlier that year.
