Margot Robbie's apparently close to joining WB's SUICIDE SQUAD, which puts her out of contention for the lead role in Rupert Sanders' GHOST IN THE SHELL. Undeterred, Sanders and Dreamworks are looking at a bigger-named actress to play their incarnation of Motoko Kusanagi: Scarlett Johansson.
Ms. Johansson has reportedly been offered $10 million to play the lead in Sanders' adaptation of the iconic manga/anime. There's no telling if she will take this deal: though it's lucrative, the 4-time Golden Globe nominee may want to edge away from the leather-clad badass thing that she's been doing for the past half-decade. But it certainly shows they're dead-set on landing a badass A-lister to head up this flick, price tag be damned.
If she did take the role, I have no doubt she could maintain the steely tenacity that would be required of her, but it wouldn't be anything we haven't seen before. I would rather they surprise us with an unknown the way WOLF OF WALL STREET introduced us to Robbie, but I can understand if that won't justify the FX budget this movie would undoubtedly need.
What y'all think? Would Johansson fill out Kusanagi's outfits as well as anyone else, or have you had enough of her pouting-and-kicking-ass routine?
