I thought HEAD OF STATE and I THINK I LOVE MY WIFE were humorous diversions with little flourishes of a directing style, but Chris Rock's third film behind the camera seems to be his best yet. It's got a ton of strong reviews out of the festival circuit, it has a ripe satirical premise (Rock plays a washed-up comedian digging deep into his soul for an extended interview), and an endless cast of big-named comics. They're not even all featured in the trailer, but this does give off the idea that this flick is loaded, front-to-back, with talent.
This stripped-down, "what's it all about?" self-exploration thing was done well by Jon Favreau this year with CHEF, and I'm thinking the similarly world-famous Rock probably has something to contribute on this subject as well.
TOP FIVE counts down on December 5th.
