We've known for a while that Jack Black was playing some sort of approximation of author R.L. Stine in the adaptation of Stine's GOOSEBUMPS series. Below, you can see the result of his impersonation in these stills courtesy of EW (via Bloody Disgusting.
For comparison, here's a look at the real Mr. Stine.
Uncanny resemblance, eh?
Obviously, Black is bringing his own persona into play, and isn't playing the lead of a big-budget children's film as a reserved, thoughtful author type. He admits that he's playing more of a "curmudgeonly dark, brooding beast master" interpretation of Stine, and not going for a direct impersonation. It still seems like a weird choice to make the author of the book series the lead character in an adaptation of his own stories, but if the rest of the film keeps up with the weirdness of that decision, this could be something MONSTER SQUAD-y and awesome.
Who else is hoping we see a monster-sized hamster in this thing?
Get GOOSEBUMPS on August 7th, 2015.
