Father Geek here once again with Latin-AICN... Unfortunately
there has been a disturbance
in the force this week, and our South American reports from Ulysses in Argentina and Coffin Joe in Brazil have been lost somewhere out there in cyber space... something about server problems and mis-routed information... right now some drug-lord, or rebel commander is reading all about Latin American film wondering what the Hell new code his buds are using, and ol' Father Geek is sitting here trying to make heads or tails out of all these damn un-referenced map coordinates. Luckly LOBO's report arrives on a different satellite link, so you loyal readers have some more useful information to read than where some stash of whatever is buried.
Harry and I are leaving for Madrid in 2 hours so if you happen to spot a couple of large , bearded redheads roaming the streets of that wonderful old place, its probably us, stop and talk with us, thats one of the reasons why we're there. Now, here's LOBO's weekly report on Spanish language film happenings...

**** I heard somewhere that ROBERTO BENIGNI is thinking about making Pinocchio and that he would like to have the cast from Life is Beautiful.
**** I also heard that Leonardo DiCaprio might be in a movie called "Catch me if you can" , a movie that is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. the kid who did a lot of scams in the 60's.
**** The short-film "Des morceaux de mafemme"(My woman's death) from France, was the first place on the Shorts-Fest "Expresion 2000" in Guanajuato, Mexico.
**** The director Bruno Madariaga (Mexico) takes the place of Pablo Perelman(Chile) on the movie "El efecto pendulo" a movie that tells the story of 4 members of the Manuel Rodriguez movement(Chile- group that try to kill Pinochet) that escape from prison. This movie is based on a novel written for one of those members, Ricardo Palma Salamanca.
**** Muppet : get a large shot-glass , pour half aged Tequila and half clear soda(lime), flip it, tap it and drink it all the way or even better shake it suck the glass and drink it.
(Father Geek note: This is Director Del Toro's favorite drink to serve at his fun parties... with one major variation... after you gulp down the drink in a single motion... He graps you by the sides of your head and shakes it vigorously... it's an experience you won't soon forget.)
AMIENS 2000
This will be the 20th time that this Film Festival takes place in France and this time there will be a special recognition to JAIME HUMBERTO HERMOSILLO who has as one of his masterpieces the movie "LA TAREA" (Homework) , a movie that in my opinion is really good and I enjoyed watching, "La Tarea" might be the movie that started the "Cine Revolution" or the new Cine in Mexico.
This Festival will start in November and besides having some of the work of Jaime Hermosillo, there is also going to be some of the more succesful movies from/in Mexico like the Ariel winner "Un Embrujo", the Rail D' Or winner in Cannes 2000 "Amores Perros"(Love is a Bitch), "Todo el Poder"(Gimme the power), "El bulto" and the Best Mexican Film this year "LA LEY DE HERODES" (Herode's Law) winner of the Ariel 2000 for Best picture and also awarded the best picture in The L.A. Film Festival.
Amiens 2000 will also have videos made by some natives from Oaxaca, Veracruz and Michoacan. So for those out there in Francia go and check it out !!. P.S. "LA TAREA" is a movie that was made with just one camera, this camera was once placed and never moved to shoot the entire film, there was no editing, the director never said CUT, there is just 4 people in this movie and still I think is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
JULIO Y SU ANGEL(WINGS OF AN ANGEL)
Wings of an Angel is the title of the movie that Jorge Cervera will direct, produce and also act. The movie was written by Jorge's wife, Penelope Cervera and is about a kid (Julio) that looks for a Guardian Angel (Angel de la guarda) that his mother talked about before she died. The director of this movie said that he was wanting to make a movie for his kids to show them good stories with the culture, landscapes, music and traditions of their country and that way they can grow thinking that way and value all of those things that are slowly fading away. Jorge will have $1,500,000 to spend in the making of the film and is a colaboration between the countries of Mexico and U.S. It looks that the editing and photography in this film are going to be great.
EL CHACOTERO SENTIMENTAL
This is a movie from Chile that so far it seems to be the Big timer in the box office down there. El Chacotero is a D.J. that recieves calls from people that want to talk about love, their sex-life and life itself, where offcourse all of the callers go under nicknames and just want to hear an opinion from other people that listen to the radio station or by the D.J. itself. There is 3 calls or stories in this flick( patas negras, todo es cancha and secretos) that are different from eachother but at the same time can be related. There is a lot of fun in this film as there is intrigue, just try to think about it this way; mix Jerry Springer with Howard Stern and Loveline is something like that but not really, this is better(except for the cool fights on JS)
This film has gotten a lot of awards like; Best International film in the N.Y. Latin Film Festival, the people's choice at the Chicago Film Festival and an award in Toulouse,France and this time they got one more in the L.A. Latin International Film Festival that just finished on Sunday.
