Magnolia has been busy with the early stages of promoting Lars Von Trier's massive sexual opus NYMPHOMANIAC over the past few months. We have seen multiple clips, posters, and an extremely extremely NSFW trailer.
But now, a U.S. release date has officially been announced. NYMPHOMANIAC will see a release in two installments. NYMPHOMANIAC: PART ONE will open on VOD on March 6th, and in theaters on March 21st. NYMPHOMANIAC: PART TWO will follow shortly after, appearing on VOD on April 3rd, and in theaters on April 18th.
Here's the official synopsis:
NYMPHOMANIAC: PART ONE is the story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is discovered badly beaten in an alley by an older bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), who takes her into his home. As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood (portrayed in flashback by Stacy Martin). PART ONE also stars Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen and Udo Kier.
PART TWO picks up with the story of Joe’s adulthood, and stars Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth and Jean-Marc Barr in addition to Gainsbourg, Skarsgård, Martin and LaBeouf.
The films are still unrated, so it will be interesting to see how that factors in to the release schedule. I don't know if Magnolia would release the same version VOD and to theaters, or if they would make cuts to the theatrical release, should it receive an NC-17 (which, I have to imagine it probably will), and keep the unedited cut for VOD. Time will tell.
This will, presumably be the shorter version of the film (4 hours total), as opposed to Von Trier's preferred 5 1/2 hour and even more sexually explicit cut, which we may yet still see - eventaully. Producer Louise Vesth told Screen Daily last week (via The Playlist):
"We decided the short version would go into distribution first so we can send the same film out to the whole world and then, after that, we will prepare the long version for distribution,” Vesth said. “We don’t know how and where that one will be distributed. It will be later in 2014.”
So you may eventually have that as an option as well, but for now, I guess we're just going to have to settle for the 2-film/4 hour, still super-sexually-explicit version.
