Hey Yo, Draven here.
Back in June, we found out that Warner Bros. had traded the rights to the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise back to Paramount. Not long after that, Derek Mears stated that Paramount was going to be working with Platinum Dunes to develop a sequel to their 2009 remake. Then, rumors of it having a found footage gimmick gained some steam so it was obvious we were going to get a new FRIDAY THE 13th film. Now we have a release date, as Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Paramount has set Friday, March 13th, 2015 as the date Jason Voorhees and his machete will return to big-screens.
We don’t know yet who is going to be involved or if they have a script or director yet. We don’t even know the approach the film is going to take. Is it going to be a direct sequel to the remake? Is it going to be a reboot? Will it be disconnected from any of the other films and just be its own thing? Is it going to have a found footage gimmick?
Speaking of that, as much as we thought the found footage trend was dying out, the buzz on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES is really hot and those who have seen it think it is going to be huge. I don’t know if that will be the case but if it is a success then I would assume Paramount (who is releasing THE MARKED ONES and had a lot of success with last year’s THE DEVIL INSIDE) would go all in on this next FRIDAY THE 13th film having the found footage gimmick.
I know it makes a lot of sense because of how cheap it is to make the found footage films and how profitable they all are (especially for Paramount) but this kills my excitement a little. I am a big FRIDAY THE 13th fan but I won’t be able to curb my disappointment if this is announced as a found footage project.
