As many of you read yesterday, I had some news about Bryan Singer, John Ottman, Apt Pupil and X-Men. Well there were some 'ill-informed' pieces of info in the piece, like the little factoid about X-Men being Ottman's last editing gig for Singer. It ain't. The following information came from a spy I'll call Eisenstein, who is very VERY close to Singer and Ottman. I know who he is, so trust me, this is gospel...
AT ISSUE: I had to get my feet wet on the Web today and write you not only because I've been wanting to to say hello, but also because I was informed today of what I would term an misconstrued "RED ALERT" comment which could seriously strain the trust between my friend John (Ottman) and Bryan (Singer); because the info was not correct.
An acquaintance who is NOT so web-ignorant called me a few minutes ago and told me about information someone sent about John's editing intentions with Bryan. I can only imagine it's from one of my friends who feels (as many do) that John needs to move on in his career and sees the editing as a stumbling block. Although it is at times frustrating for him(considering all the films he could score during the editing of just one of his and Bryan's films), he does not necessarily see it that way (as a detriment). Bryan and John, ironically, just a couple days ago discussed this at length -- the future of how they will mold their relationship to both of their advantage. They very much intend on staying together and value their creative relationship, perhaps in an altered capacity ultimately, but they agreed that John would ALWAYS, in some way, be involved in molding their films. I would very much appreciate a correction of the false statement that John will not be editing beyond X-Men. This is not necessarily true. Tackling both scoring and editing on a project of that size will reach a point of being nearly impossible for him, because of the myriad of test screenings, re-editing, etc, which they never have had to go through to such an extent on their past films; so a 2nd editor may be required at some point, under John's supervision, to finish it off as John is beginning to write the score. It will be hard to pry himself away from it being the control freak he is, but it's something they will probably have to do, which in essence, may be a great experiment to see how John's supervising another editor can work. This part is true, but nothing beyond that! Again, this is not necessarily the LAST film John will edit:) Also, there is currently no confirmed shooting date for X-Men. (Maybe November or so.) I'm sure you will know when there is!
RELEASE DATE/MARKETING OF APT PUPIL: You can re-assure those concerned about the release date and the marketing of Apt Pupil that BECAUSE the studio really believes in the film, OCTOBER has thus far been decided upon because it is a much better position for the film to be in. So, although it would be nice to have their work out there, it hopefully will be for the greater good that it goes then. It's sort of like Suspects: They finished that and waited FOREVER for it to come out -- (although I feel the marketing was seriously lacking when it was released; this apparently will not be the case for Apt.) As with Suspects, John edited a trailer for Apt Pupil. They will be making a version of it soon for marketing.
The Star Trek film is a project John has had in mind for years, and, yes, he is in talks to direct it. It's in its infancy. It's simply in development, and there is nothing concrete in terms of a schedule or studio yet.
Well, that covers it I guess. Shees, I wrote alot. I'll tell Keyser to be a little more careful next time if I can find him.
Thanks, Eisenstein
