This Week's Saturday Shorts: Mario, Astronauts, and Cannibals!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with this week's exciting selection of cinematic fun. Before anything - my apologies for posting so late in the day - I had to run down to Houston unexpectedly. I'm genuinely pumped up with the films I get to feature this week and as you can tell by the article title, they've each got a heaping amount of genre goodness that you can really sink your teeth into. (In fact, the cannibal one... Ergh... nevermind - that joke would have been in poor taste...) One thing this week's not missing is creativity out the wazoo. You might see some familiar faces in the bunch, so keep your eyes peeled. So let's hop on in, shall we?

THE CARTRIDGE FAMILY: BATTLE FOR EMPLOYMENT

TRT: 10:23

Up first we have something special, AJ Bowen rockin' a Nintendo themed short written by Jackson Stewart and directed by William Rot. This short is funny, quick, visually interesting, and manages to hold your attention until the the last frame. Plug in and hit play. If you like what you see, go hit up their IndieGoGo and help them make more!

INFINITY SHRED - MAPPER

TRT: 7:53

Up next we've got Dean C. Marcial's stylized space odyssey that transcends time and... well... space. I love the look, and can only really describe it as "clean." "Two astronauts pass the time and through other dimensions after their rocket inexplicably blows up." Be sure to hit up the film's site if you like what you see!

DEEP RED DANDELIONS

TRT: 10:29

And here we have a well made film that I found highly disturbing. Brendan Butler has created a 10 minutes of provocative uncomfortable intrigue. The film follows one of the most famous cannibals in US history and paints a rather sinister story where you can't quite look away. "The film is based on letters written by Albert Fish, meaning that his version of the story, excerpts from the letters, and quotes of his were used to write the script." - that should give you an idea of what you're in for.

APPLICATIONS

TRT: 7:23

"How far would you go to feel beautiful? One woman struggles with her own appearance as popular opinion tells her what 'true beauty' is. But is it real beauty or just misdirection?" From Paul Hugins, we have a seven minutes of wonderful creepiness.

TRAILER: THE FUZZ

TRT: 1:41

Here's a fun trailer for a web series I would kill to be able to show you all. Unfortunately for Saturday Shorts, this series is on Yahoo, so I can't embed it. That said, it's insanely awesome and you should absolutely check it out. Thanks to Saturday Shorts Alumni Peter Bradley for tipping me off to this fun show, which he actually helped puppeteer.

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capacity, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
