Euro-AICN: HARRY POTTER, QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, PREQUEL 2, Hans Zimmer, etc.

Father Geek here with the latest Euro-AICN column. Both Edgard and Darth Bond are traveling on vacation for the next couple of weeks so there may be a little less to the columns till they return to Paris. However Ozymandias is still in place sending Father Geek reports, so If you have Euro-news you would normally be sending to our Paris offices for the next few weeks also send that info to Ozzie at His Dublin Penthouse and he'll see to it that the World reads your story.

Seems like the Harry Potter rumour mill is spinning ever faster.......

Our friends at Empire Online (http://www.empireonline.co.uk) tell us that:

Former England rugby player Martin Bayfield has been in discussions about joining the production of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

At 6 foot 10, the sportsman is ideal to play gamekeeper Hagrid. But maybe only the giant's body, as the role has been linked with Robbie Coltrane. So perhaps we'll be seeing a Darth Vader situation?

Bayfield, who retired from rugby following an injury, came to the attention of the filmmakers after they saw him give an after-dinner speech.

And here's a pic of that kid (Liam Aiken) cast as HARRY POTTER...

And also from teletext.co.uk we have...

Terence Stamp has confirmed he's not in Star Wars: Episode 2 - and put a gentle boot into the sci-fi franchise for good measure. He told Lorraine Kelly on GMTV: "Actors prefer to work with actors. When I arrived on set for Episode 1 George Lucas said, 'I've given Natalie (Portman) the day off'.

"So he pointed to a piece of paper on a post and said pretend that's her. They couldn't afford me again."

I received this bit on VERHOEVEN'S next...

Thought i might pass on some news concerning Paul Verhoeven's next project after the 'Hollow Man' picture

There are two projects which he will contemplate. Both interestingly are biographies - one of Rasputin, and the other of Hitler. Both titles of the screenplays/short story go by the same name. Rasputin is written by Roselyne Bosch, and at the moment has a full complete screenplay. Hitler is more in the form of a long story, with no actual real screenplay, written by Aaron Somal, and interestingly enough Paul Verhoeven. It is well known that the 'Hitler project' would be his dream project, but would any studio be brave enough to make a motion picture about one of the most evil hated men?

The actual short story on the Hitler project from what i have read is basically a film on his life, from birth to death, and has no ulterior motives - or having a director/writer put their own view into things. Doesn't sound like much fun? Well let me tell you it is, especially as it actually explores one of the greatest myths of all time, his death. It is hard to describe - but both projects are more physic analogy of the characters, actually getting into their brains, rather than the usual Verhoeven projects. Shock, horror, is Verhoeven, looking for critical acclaim?

Both projects would as far as i can see have very low budgets. They don't show any actual footage or war, as far as i have read. <

Here's a bit on the INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE sequel...

This morning the Star newspaper here in Dublin has reported that rising Irish star (and he'll definitely be rising an awful lot higher if this one is true!) Stuart Townsend is bouncing back from having been supposedly bounced from a part in Lord Of The Rings last year by being cast as Lestat in the upcoming Queen Of The Damned. The boy is 26 and you may have seen him in the likes of Trojan Eddie, Shooting Fish, Reurrection Man and Wonderland. According to the same story Aaliyah has also been cast... If you'd like to get a look at him check out The Story at Their Site .

Remember where you heard it first!

And here's another bit of interesting news for Soundtrack geeks sent in by Amsterdam Pat...

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is to pre-open this year's 27th Flanders International Film Festival - Ghent (October 10-21, 2000) with a unique concert. A world première, 'Hans Zimmer Live in Concert' will present a wide variety of the composer's most memorable scores. The event takes place on October 10 in the 5,000-seat Kuipke hall in Ghent (Citadelpark).

Gladiator Hans Zimmer is the composer of scores to two films that currently hold a top-10 US box office position: John Woo's 'Mission: Impossible 2', and 'Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator'. Zimmer also signed for the score to 'The Road To Eldorado' for which he and Sir Elton John joined forces again. Future assignments include Ridley Scott's 'Hannibal', the much anticipated sequel to 'Silence of the Lambs', Michael Bay's 'Pearl Harbor', and Barry Levinson's 'Outlaws'. Zimmer recently also delivered the main theme for the new German TV series 'Die Motorradcops'. Hans Zimmer is further also in charge of the music department of DreamWorks SKG.

The programme will consist of music from films like Driving Miss Daisy, The Lion King (for which he won a Golden Globe, Two Grammy's and the Oscar for Best Score), The Thin Red Line), Nine Months, Crimson Tide, Power Of One, The Fan, True Romance, Thelma & Louise, Rainman and of course 'Gladiator'. Zimmer will perform with the Flemish Radio Orchestra, conducted by Dirk Brossé.

Also joining Zimmer with a medley of their work are composers John Powell and Harry Gregson Williams who worked on the scores for 'Tigger', 'Chicken Run', and 'Face Off'. Both are attached to Santa Monica based Media Ventures, a creative pool set up by Zimmer and Jay Rifkin in 1989 where young, promising composers are made ready to conquer Hollywood. Media Ventures also operates as a developer of internet applications and -marketing.
