New This Week

At long last the second season of “Star Trek: Enterprise,” the one Trek series that was actually produced for HDTVs, comes to Blu-ray. The second episode of the second season, “Carbon Creek,” is one of my favorites. It tells the tale of T’Pol’s Vulcan great-grandmother, and her experiences while stranded in rural 1957 Pennsylvania. The episode carries (intentionally, I’d wager) a strong “City on the Edge of Forever” vibe. Season two also brought the Borg-centric “First Contact” sequel “Regeneration,” and the mindmeld/AIDS allegory “Stigma.”

The new set comes with a phenomenal package of extras, which I expect I’ll delve into in a separate post.

Boardwalk Empire’s third season was my fourth favorite hourlong of 2012 (following “Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men"). Nucky gain a stunning new girlfriend, an easily offended new enemy and a relationship with Gaston Bullock Means. Chalky White recruited Eddie Cantor and put his future son-in-law to work. Murderous former treasury agent Nelson Van Alden went underground got into irons and moonshine. Gillian seduced a fellow who looked a lot like her son. Richard Harrow kissed a girl and retrieved the Darmody boy. The best season yet of this great series.
