Father Geek here with a report from the phantastic Dragon Con. Harry, Quint, Tom Joad, and I attended the 1998 event and had a ball visiting with Tom Savini, Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, Forrey Ackerman, Harlen Ellison, a dozen Playboy Playmates, John Carpender, GWAR, and The Misfits among others. This event is just huge, with a giant dealers room, parties, scores of great panels, parties, films, parties, dozens of your favorite artists, and exciting live music. Oh yeah, and parties...
Qx_koyote here, Just got back from Atlanta, where I was subjected the largest science fiction convention in North America, if not the world, Dragoncon 2000. Wow, where to start, how about here:
Highlander Endgame: Methos is back, there I said it. From what we saw there of Endgame, this is one to see. THIS FILM WILL MAKE UP FOR THE SHITE WHICH WAS PARTS 2&3. Begin the flame war, but straight from Dimension's mouth, 2, NOR 3 EVER HAPPENED!!!!!!!!! Duncan, and Connor both are in this film, as I am sure you all know, and the scenes shown were great, however they would not comment on who becomes the "one". We're just gonna have to wait and find out. However, all of the scenes were as beautiful as the first film's, and the sword fights were superb, reminiscent of the final duel in Phantom Menace. Go see it. We the suffering Highlander fans, have been redeemed.
Next we have The Crow: Salvation. My evil Henchman, Goth Muppet(Yes Moriarty, I too have a henchman he is an intelligent media whore as well.), and I watched this one in it's entirety. It is a good film. Not great, but good. Here is the basic storyline: New Crow, wrongfully convicted of murder, rots on death row, is executed, comes back to kill the warden, the judge, etc. etc. etc. Here is the only problem with the mythos of this film. The Crow, being the classical Revenant/undead sort 0f creature, is supposed to come back from the dead, after a sudden, and greatly wrong thing has happened to him. Someone sitting on Death Row for years, seeing that chair at the end of the hall, I believe has every Idea that his death is coming, and would be ready for it. It just Isn't believeable that he had not made peace with himself, while he was waiting to die, thereby not allowing himself to come back as the Crow. Kirsten Dunst gives a good Performance, As the "Sarah" archetype. Overall, this was average.
Time for something completely different. For those of you familiar with the work of Joe Christ, you may have already seen his short film known as "My Struggle". For those of you not familiar with his work, and looking for something quite disturbing to watch. This movie is it. The film is about A group of Inbred Amish Farmers living near, you guessed it, Intercourse, PA, which are kidnapping women to strengthen their genepool. Delightfully twisted in ways unknown to any film maker outside of Joe Christ. If you get to see any of his Films, they are an interesting little treat. Dungeons and Dragons, This is gonna rock! I mean it, several scenes were shown, the one that remains fresh in my mind is a scene where weveral dragons are descending upon a castle, and several more cloaked figure are standing on the wall of the castle........I believe that all of the Geeks out there who have played D&D all have a good Idea of what a fireball spell should look like going off.........It looks beautiful. We were also told that all the scenes we were shown were preliminary, and still to get some touch up. If this is true, we are going to have an action/fantasy Orgy my friends, lay to rest all doubts, this movie will hit the mainstream. You will love it, the eye candy alone is enough. The plot we couldn't exactly see from what we were shown, but the action, and the effects are VERY GOOD. This is the realm, of Dungeons, and Dragons.
I love Troma Films....Lloyd Kaufman is a great guy, and their crew know how to party. I am going to be sent a copy of the new toxie Movie, that's right Toxie. More on that when it arrives. However these guys had several of the Troma Universe stars at their Delaers Booth, they were Selling both bootlegged, and Official copies of their own movies.....And invited me to the Troma Wet T-Shirt Contest....... Like I said, these guys know how to party down. Toxie is on the way, and he'll be fighting all the other Troma Stars, like Sgt. Kabukiman, and Evil Toxie. This will be a fun ride.
There is a big push going on to get more Anime on Sci-Fi Network, perhaps we geeks should visit the site that they are basing their decision on...... www.scifi.com/anime . Help out, there is a huge market for this, and I want to see Neon Genesis on network television here.
I saw little new about LOTR, but I did meet Xoanon from www.theonering.net . We were in the Brad Dourif panels together, but I was so busy with the rest of the Con, I didn't have time to see all of this track, and as he was there, I figured we would hear of it from him.
I am in still in shock from Troma, these guys are cool.
David Prowse, Who Autographs everything, as "David Prowse, IS DARTH VADER!!!!"( sad, no?) Was at the bar for a while, and my henchman had a drink with him. he is a nice guy, if not a bit delusional.
I personally was hanging out with Jerry Only from the Misfits, for most of the weekend, and having a good time there.....and even found time to get to several parties, and become highly intoxicated........I love girls in bondage gear, and a huge part of Dragoncon is just that......
