According to Deadline, our buddies at Drafthouse Films have picked up the North American rights to Alex van Warmerdam's Cannes entry, BORGMAN. This is the first Dutch film to make the Cannes competition lineup in nearly four decades. It seems to be a darkly comic story about the effect that a shaggy, old drifter has on the life of a bourgeois family, with, perhaps, some supernatural (or, at the very least, highly uncomfortable) results.
I really like Drafthouse founder Tim League's press quote about the film, where he says, “Maybe once a year, I am deluged after a premiere with texts and emails to the effect of ‘this is such a Drafthouse movie. It's strange, disturbing, hysterical and utterly unique. BORGMAN is the quintessential Drafthouse film of Cannes. We can’t wait to share it with audiences in North America.” After watching the trailer below, I'd have to agree with the idea of this being in their wheelhouse. I dig the surreal, deadpan humor of the small bits that we see, and any film where a young girl brutally bludgeons a helpless man to death with a cinder block has my attention.

Drafthouse plans to roll BORGMAN out theatrically and on VOD sometime next year.
