Hey folks, Harry here with a review of a film by.... bum bum bauauauauaummmm.... A Film Critic!!! Eeeeek, Sellout!!! How Dare He!!!??? hahahaha, Sorry, I went a bit TalkBacky there for a second. Well, it seems that this seems to be one of those cases where the Critic doesn't get stuffed. From the sound of Patricia's review here, Lurie's film is dead on wonderful. We'll have to wait and see and hear more... but it's never too early to be looking for those Fall Jewels. If it is a crown jewel for Dreamworks, expect a similar campaign for the film. Plenty of advance screenings, debut at Toronto perhaps, and... well, you get the idea. Here's the scoop..
Hi, Harry- first timer Patricia here. I don't know how into this kind of film you guys are and it isn't opening until the fall, but Dreamworks seems to have their "American Beauty" locked in. By that, I mean the heavy duty adult film with strong sexual overtones that will rock the Oscars and all the awards that the critics give out at the end of the year. I caught this one at a screening a couple of weeks ago (Its taken me a long time- forgive me), where it got a hefty round of applause- which I almost never hear at these things.
Okay. The film deals with a female senator (Joan Allen) who is nominated to be Vice-President by the President himself (Jeff bridges). She is brought to her knees (in more ways than one) by a nasty congressman (Republican, of course!) who unearths the fact that she got into a college sorority be being involved in a gang-bang. The film may be about politics, but it is extremely funny and edgy and fast. Sam elliott has one line (which I'm to pure to repeat here) which will become a classic.
If D-works thinks this movie is Oscar-bound, they are right on target. This is especially true of Gary Oldman who plays the Congressman. I didn't realize it was him until the end of the film when the credits came up. Bridges and Allen and Elliott are wonderful and do what I think is the best of their work that I have seen. There is a speech that Bridges delivers at the end of the film that I think is majorly rocking and will either get you cheering or crying.
The movie was directed and written by Rod Lurie, the movie critic. Anybody hoping for him to fall flat on his face has another thing coming. Then again, I'm a democrat and so is this movie.
Patricia
