Folks... Here we go with one of the first dead on looks at the finished print of CHICKEN RUN... oh.... and as your read about it... Remember... I told ya so, as did Moriarty... hehehehehe...
Hey there Harry, The New World Samurai here. I told you I was going to send you a review of Chicken Run today, and for the record, today is Saturday, June 10. This is my third time writing this review, as I had some severe computer diffulculties that delayed this review for about 5 hours. So, should I start by laying my very strong opinion of this movie on the table, or should I pussyfoot around a bit? I think I'll do both.
First things first. One of the co-directors of Chicken Run is the genuis Nick Park, who is the creator of the brilliantly animated Wallace and Gromit short films (A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, and that one with the sheep). With this film, he proves that he does indeed have a true talent for stop-motion animation. He uses new techniques and styles to elevate this beyond what you could imagine could be done, and he uses them well. This is one of those movies that just has that "Wow, that looks fantastic" feel to it. Nick Park has this uncanny ability to take a hunk of clay, and turn it into a living thing. Now that I have the technical standpoint of the movie covered, onto my review of the movie Chicken Run itself.
Chicken Run is, without a doubt, with an absolute certainty..............one of the........... BEST FILMS This year.
This film is a true work of art from beginning to end. I will see this movie again for full price on opening night, and I recommend that you see this film too. I cannot believe how much I truly loved this film. It is the perfect comedy, and is definately not made for kids. Granted many a child will want to see this movie, but so many of the jokes in this movie will be over the kid's head, that the jokes will be cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet with 747's. Chicken Run pays homage (through parody) to many of the excellent escape films of our time. It goes from The Great Escape and Escape from Alcatraz to The Bridge on the River Kwai and even, in one brilliantly played out scene, Raiders of the Lost Ark (or any other Indiana Jones movie for that matter). That particular scene is so perfect that you find yourself thinking, "All this is missing is the bullwhip, and we'd have the next Jones movie". The voice acting is inspired, with the stand-outs being Mel Gibson as Rocky "The Lone Free Ranger" and Joan Horrocks as Babs "Me entire life just flashed before my eyes......It was boring." Nick Park is one of few true masterminds in the world of animation, and this is something that adults should want to see.
Take my word for it, this is worth the simple hour and a half, and the energy this film has makes Gone in Sixty Seconds look like My Dinner with Andre.
This has been a public service announcement from The New World Samurai.
