Hey folks, Harry here... The following review stresses how funny some of the ME, MYSELF AND IRENE stuff is, and by doing so spoils some of the jokes. Of course... it's one thing to 'hear about' sperm hanging from a fella's ear... and it's another thing all together to actually seeing it. There are gigantic roars of laughter in this movie that noone online has even hinted at yet. And that's good. The reviewers one criticism about the film was that they preferred the story in THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY... but frankly I preferred this story. To each their own eh? Alrighty... here we go... beware of spoilers...
Hey Harry,
The site has been kicking ass as usual, so keep doing what you're doing! I haven't been able to send you a scoop since you put up my review of a Dogma screening I caught last year in Manhattan, but here's another for you...
Last night (Friday), I got into a screening of Me, Myself, & Irene at the new AMC 25 here in Manhattan, a pretty damn fine theatre, I must say, and with a 14 screen theatre right across the street, it gives us New Yorkers 39 screens within 20 yards of each other! We didn't get any curtain speech and the movie appeared to be fully put together.
Let me say, I really have had no desire to see this movie. I really enjoyed There's Something About Mary, but I had reservations about Jim Carrey's "return" to his roots with his out of control humor. The story is much weaker than Mary's but if what you're looking for is site gag after sight gag after on-liner after one-liner, than go see this movie. If story is not important to you, but you simply want to laugh, then go see this movie.
The jokes really do hit home and the Farrelly's are true to form with a shitting dog, a nunchuk wielding little person, a big rubber cock up the ass, and plenty of "Holy shit they didn't just show that!" moments.
Carrey does a very competent job with the split personality and Renee Zellweger has just moved up into my top three cutest people in the universe (feel free to give her my e-mail if you ever talk to her!)
The audience was really into it and laughed loudly and consistently throughout the movie. I did my best to get my hands on a press packet that I saw some guy holding, but no dice. We were, however, all given tootsie pops with little rubber chickens attached to them...a nice touch considering the film's sight gag.
Let me finish by saying that it's worth seeing for two moments alone...hearing Carrey call Zellweger his "little pussy fart" and the breast feeding mother scene which I'm sure should convince every straight male in the audience that being an actor is possibly the best job on the planet.
Lastly, to all the AICN-ers out there, on an unrelated Star Wars note...I love Jar Jar, he serves the overall story, and he WILL prove himself in the long run. Flame away!
