Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Picture.
I tried to think of the perfect picture for Good Friday and boy do I have a good one. Not only is this one of the most wince-inducing practical effects of all time, Paul Verhoeven’s goofy gory sci-fi action flick is a thinly veiled retelling of the story of Jesus. I’m not kidding. RoboCop is Jesus… if Jesus had a giant gun and a spike knuckle. Just listen to Verhoeven’s commentary track if you don’t believe me.
Today’s picture is of the amazing puppet made of Peter Weller during Officer Murphy’s death scene… his crucifixion if you will.
This whole sequence messed me up as a kid and when I saw the full sequence as a teenager thanks to the Criterion release it was even more gut-punching. Paul Verhoeven went about as extreme as you could possibly go. In related news: we need more directors like Paul Verhoeven.
