It hasn't been published yet (and won't be until June) but there's already movement in Hollywood on Neil Gaiman's new novel THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE. I can't wait to read it myself - any new Neil Gaiman is a very good thing, and I've been needing my fix for a while now. And for those needing somthing that comes close (SHAMELESS PLUG COMING) you could do worse than our very own Massawyrm's new book - C. Robert Cargill's DREAMS AND SHADOWS. I'm not finished yet, but it's quite good, and has that Gaiman feel about it.
Hollywood's wasting no time in adapting THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE - according to Deadline, Tom Hanks' Playtone is coming close to acquiring the rights to the novel, with an eye on Joe Wright (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, HANNA) to direct, with Wright's production comany, Shoebox, partnering with Playtone.
Wright's an interesting director - HANNA plays very much like a dark fairy tale, and if anyone knows about the dark side of fairy tales, it's Neil Gaiman. He's not the director I would expect for a project like this, but Wright definitely has the chops to pull it off. I hope the book is as good as I expect, and that Wright makes the material work should he take on the story.
