Paul Thomas Anderson has lined up a familiar leading man for his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Paul Thomas Anderson's next flick has long been known to be an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's period LA detective story INHERENT VICE. Rumors of Robert Downey Jr. being involved have danced around the project and the concept of Downey playing with PTA makes me smile, but it seems that is not to be.

Instead it seems like Anderson's MASTER lead, Joaquin Phoenix, is in talks to play the lead, a private dick named Larry "Doc" Sportello whose personal vices include copious amounts of pot.

The story is a noir tale set against the backdrop of the summer of love that involves murder, double crosses, billionaires and crooked cops. It's not exactly in PTA's usual wheelhouse, but I'm stoked to see someone serious take on standard noir tale, especially one with a different backdrop than we're used to.

Phoenix's performance in The Master is next level stuff, so him reteaming with PTA is only good news.

Thoughts?
