The Kidd here...
Anytime I choose to hold a contest that requires its participants to do something more than just submit their names and hope for some random dumb luck, it's always interesting to me to watch people bitching and complaining about how they don't have time to do something of the sort. They have a life, you know? They can't put forth any effort, because, for some reason, they're entitled to whatever I'm giving away, and I should just hand it over. After all, their very existence is enough reason that they should be the ones claiming the prize.
Well, sorry... that's not how it works. Ain't It Cool has always been about the community it fosters and encourages. There's always been a level of interactivity to the site that others have never been able to even come close to capturing or duplicating. And that's something that should continue to flourish through people who are willing to go the extra mile in ther geekdom for something they'd like to have, something they think is cool. It's your prerogative if you just want to drop the 20 bucks on your own and pick up a Blu-ray... but it's my prerogative to do something that might engage people... and those people's prerogatives to say, "Fuck it... I'm getting involved."
I really didn't know what I was going to get out of asking people to record their own cover versions of the "Thunder Buddies" song from TED. But I knew that some people would brave internet embarrassment (because who the hell cares) for a chance at owning one of last year's tremendously funny movies.
Yep, I got a few takers.
