The Kidd here...
It's about that time for the studios to start ramping up promotion for the summer releases that'll be heading our way in 2013, so consider me unsurprised that we're getting a new look at Disney's THE LONE RANGER this morning.
In the teaser, we got a bit of a peek at how important control of the railroads will be throughout the film's story. This time out, we get a better sense of who the Ranger is and a greater feel for his interaction and relationship with Tonto. It does take about 30 seconds for you to even realize this is a trailer for THE LONE RANGER, but once it gets going... well, let's just say that I'm not too concerned about Johnny Depp's role here... and who thought that would have been the case months ago? There had been serious concern, based on his Jack Sparrow portrayals that Depp might ham it up in the sidekick role, but he looks to be playing it fairly straight and seamlessly enough that I don't anticipate his Tonto being a distraction in the final cut. He certainly didn't throw me off here, and that's a good start.
Plus, this picture looks beautiful, so, at least we'll have a flick that's quite pleasing to the eye. I just hope the story holds up. However, with Tom Wilkinson as the villain, I'd say it at least has a fighting chance.
THE LONE RANGER opens on July 3, 2013.
