Well, Father Geek's here with the 1st of Euro-AICN's daily reports from those infamous sandy beaches where the world's most famous film makers show off their wares (and some nifty topless starlets to boot) every May. The fest doesn't really get rolling for another day yet, but we've got our crew in place so expect lots of on the spot coverage, and maybe a little uncoverage also over the next several days...
Hello... Edgard here with our first report from...
well... the beaches in the South of France, where some kind of
festival will start soon... There are two movies I am
mainly looking for : the new Coen movie and the new
Lars Von Trier movie... and here we got a first look
at O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU ?... it makes me even
more excited !!! So here's Champagne 2000 (what a cool
name, makes me thirsty).
So here's Champagne 2000 (what a cool name, makes me thirsty).
Before my review, here's a small news : some of my sources told me that producer Rick MacCallum made some location search while he was in Paris for the Film Festival in February... all this for some film with lightsabers... True or not, I don't know... but my sources were convinced...
Now my spoiler free review of O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU ?
I had the chance to see the much expected new film of the Coen Brothers and the news are good ! As you probably already know the film follows three crooks who escaped from jail to find the money that Cooney has been hiding before being arrested. Fans of George Clooney will love this one because he delivers one of his most memorable performances yet (somewhere between cartoons and Gary Grant on acid), and it would be totally justified if he could get the price for best actor (even if he seems dubbed for the singing sequences).
One of the strength of this film is the directing : it's one of the most beautiful film shot by the Coen Brothers, especially during a "blessing" sequence near the water where the colours are all in the greys and only yellow comes out from the trees : purely wonderful. I haven't seen anything as beautiful since SLEEPY HOLLOW. The only small negative remark I can make is the lack of rhythm in the middle of the film. vers le milieu. Hopefully when the film is over, a lot of sequences comes back to your memory like the encounter with John Goodman, the metamorphosis of one of the character in a frog or the boxing fight with Clooney... The Coen Brothers have not lost anything from their talent...
