We've known for a while now that CHRONICLE scripter Max Landis was hustling to generate a sequel to this year's generally excellent first installment, which was directed by Josh Trank.
Now, in an interview with Playlist, Max's father John Landis (yes, THE John Landis) reveals that Max is encountering resistance from Fox regarding which direction his sequel should take. The subject came up while John was discussing complications on a horror move he'd been developing for a French producer.
Landis even went as far as to compare his plight with his son Max Landis, who is currently working on several gestating projects after his hit superhero flick “Chronicle” earlier this year. One of those project is “Chronicle 2” for Fox, which Landis says, “He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.’
I do think there's plenty of room to broaden/enhance/explore the CHRONICLE universe, and tend to agree that the best path may not be to simply rehash/mimic the first movie. Of course, that's basically what's happened with the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films..and now they're on the fourth (or fifth or sixth) picture (depending on how you look at it), so what do I know?
