Latin-AICN # 3; BOSSA NOVA, WOMAN ON TOP, PLATA QUEMADA, and others

Well its the third week for our Latin-AICN column and ol' Coffin Joe is still here even though you readers are not exactly showering him with mountains of Movie News. Father Geek once again would like to ask you to send him or me ANY Latin related film news you may run across, but I'll let him tell you about it himself...

Hello there boys and girls , Coffin Joe here . Before I start this third installment of Latin-AICN , I´d like to say a few words regarding E-mails to this column, or the lack of them. It is very difficult, nearly impossible to collect all the news from all the countries in the Western Hemisphere without some help from the film lovers in those different countries. So PLEASE HELP OUT by sending in some reports to Coffin Joe down here in Sao Paulo. Anyways let´s get the news rolling . A very special thanks to our spy in Argentina , Ulysses , who has been the only real collaborator I´ve had so far on a regular basis . ( His e-mail was the only one with news that I received this week ! ). News baby :

-While doing a press junket for Deuce Bigalow here in Brazil , Rob Scheneider talked about his next project , a movie called " The Animal " ,its all about a man who suffers an accident and ends up getting organ transplants from animals . The catch is he starts to become act like these animals .

-Still on the whole press junket scene , I saw Amy Irving , while doing interviews for Bossa Nova , talking about her role in " Traffic " , the new Steven Soderbergh flick . She said it came totally out of the blue , she didn´t expect to get called at all , and that it´s a small role , as Michael Douglas´ character´s wife .

-Here´s the official Brazilian line-up for Cannes film festival :

1) " Estorvo " ( called " Embrouille " in French ) by director Ruy Guerra is in the official competition . Director Ruy Guerra , singer/songwriter Chico Buarque ( author of the book the movie is based on ) , Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría and Brazilian actress Bianca Byington ( both cast members ) will all be there to support the movie .

2) " Eu , Tu , Eles " by Andrew Waddington will be shown in the non-competitive " Un Certain Regard " sessions . Besides the director , cast members Regina Casé and Lima Duarte will be there .

The other Brazilian movies at Cannes are three shorts : " 3 Minutos " by Ana Luiza Azevedo , which is in the official competition ; " De Janela pro Cinema " by Quiá Rodrigues , which is in the " Cinéfondation " showcase ; and " Rota de Colisão " by Roberval Duarte , which will be shown in the Filmmakers showcase .

-Still on the whole Cannes film festival topic , in the " un Certain Regard " showcase they will screen the movie " Woman on Top " , an American movie directed by Fina Torres , but with a Latin flavor ( kinda like Selena , an American movie made for Latin audiences ) starring Spanish beauty Penélope Cruz and Brazilian actor Murilo Benício .

-May 11 is the release date of " Plata Quemada " in Argentina . The movie is based on a novel of the same name which tells the story of three crooks that are hired by a mysterious character , in order to rob an armored truck containing a fair amount of , you guessed it , money . The gig goes wrong and they must flee to Uruguay . Our spy in Argentina , Ulysses , has read the book , and he says it presents great material for a movie , in particular the climax , an end-of-the-world shootout which consumes nearly a third of the novel . The movie is directed by Marcelo Piñeiro ( " Tango Feroz " , " Ashes from Paradise " ) and it stars Leonardo Sbaraglia , Eduardo Noriega ( " Open your Eyes " ) , Hector Alterio and some really hot babes from Argentina.

Send me those e-mails for the love of God! I really would love to actually get some material to edit. Just post them to me at our Latin-AICN Office here in Brazil. Send any news or reviews from Mexico and all the other film producing countries. Our readers want it all. See you all next week.

Coffin Joe says bye.
